Almost 20 years on from his first recordings of Tchaikovsky romances, Dmitri Hvorostovsky's return to this seminal Russian repertoire is a triumphant one. Hvorostovsky now brings to this repertoire a voice and performance that is mature, rich and well-rounded, filling in the very few blanks that he left in his earlier attempts.
Hvorostovsky has always sounded at home in Tchaikovsky's music, and the pairing again proves formidable. The recording itself is excellent, with great room sound and no lost sound across the entire dynamic range.
The Russian romances aren't oft-recorded or sung in the west, so this recording, featuring a world-class baritone singing expertly in his own language is a must-have if you're looking to familiarize yourself with this repertoire--the music is as beautiful as anything we exalt in the Italian, French, or German languages. Hvorostovsky is quite simply the best man for the job here. Excellent, excellent recording.
